Deep cleaning in the summer

- Monday, June 30, 2014

Here at Dura-Shine Clean, we love to make you sparkle! But did you know that cleaning is much more than aesthetically pleasing? Cleaning helps keep your home and your office germfree. We also love summer! Spring and early summer are the ideal seasons to shake off the vestiges of winter, and remove all the dust, germs, and bacteria that have built up during the cold months of the year. Think of it as your home’s New Year resolution. It’s a time for rejuvenation, refocusing and making new goals. Your home and office need that as well. Our Top-to-Bottom Deluxe Package is perfect for a thorough Spring cleaning. We focus on details routinely ignored in a regular house cleaning, like hard-to-clean spaces, or spaces in a home that are not subject to the wear and tear of daily activity.

What is Spring Cleaning?

Historically, people kept their homes shut tight during cold winter months. They heated and lighted their homes with coal, wood, oil and candles. When warm weather finally came, it was a welcome opportunity to open the windows and doors, and freshen up a home that had become murky and noxious through winter. On the first warm, dry day of the season, the whole family would pitch in to sweep, wipe down, shine, and scrub off all the wax and the ashes that had seeped into walls and furniture.

It may be true we no longer heat our modern homes with coal and wood, but winter is peak flu season. A deep cleaning helps you disinfect surfaces from germs, microbes, dust, and stains. We believe in healthy homes and happy, active families. If you’re looking to spring clean your home make sure the stage is set for a thorough cleaning. To prep your home for a deep top-down cleaning, spend a day or two uncluttering your home, organizing, and donating unwanted items. This will clear up space and facilitate the cleaning process for when the cleaners arrive at your door.

With our Top-to-Bottom Deluxe Package, we’ll bring in two members of our trained, expert cleaning staff to clean everything from wood trim work, baseboards, light switches, drapes, blinds, shades, ceiling fans, light fixtures, doors and door handles, tops of refrigerators, furniture, and cabinets. Early summer is also a good time to clean carpets to preserve indoor air quality, since carpets can easily soak up contaminants. Even surfaces and spaces that look clean may be wrought with pathogens.

A clean home is glowing with health and shine. Let Dura-Shine Clean’s knowledgeable and expert cleaning staff come in and give your home a thorough, all-inclusive clean.Your home or office space will be left spotless clean. 3 Steps to a Clean Washing Machine

3 Steps to a Clean Washing Machine

The dirt that disappears from your clothes has to go somewhere, right? Follow these three easy steps from Better Homes and Gardens to make sure that grimy buildup doesn’t end up on your clothes. Completing these three steps quarterly will eliminate buildup in hoses and pipes, and ensure your clothes are as clean as possible.

Step One – Run an empty, regular cycle on hot, using two cups of vinegar instead of detergent. The hot water-vinegar combo removes and prevents bacteria growth.

Step Two – In a bucket or nearby sink, mix ¼ cup vinegar with a quart of warm water. Use this mixture, plus a sponge and dedicated toothbrush, to clean the inside of the machine. Pay special attention to dispensers and the inside of the door. If your soap dispenser is removable, soak it in the vinegar and water before scrubbing. If you have a front-loading machine, be sure to clean the rubber seal. Don’t forget to wipe down the exterior of the machine, too.

Step Three – Run one more empty, regular cycle on hot, without detergent or vinegar.

Work and Family Balance

BALANCE WORK AND YOUR FAMILY LIFE

Are you worn out trying to succeed at work while wrangling responsibilities at home? Try these ideas for creating strategies to help you balance work and family life.

Decide what you want. Think about what you really want from life for you and your family. How does your job fit into that? Are you working for self-fulfillment or merely for the paycheck?

Decide what’s important. Based on your values, figure out which tasks are absolutely essential and which are less so. Set priorities for deciding what works. If spending time with your family during your Sunday is important, consider utilizing a housecleaning service to tackle the day-to-day chores so you can focus on your family.

Transition between the two worlds. It usually takes 15-20 minutes to shift gears from work to family. Clear your head on the way home by listening to music as you commute, or try mediating or reading if you utilize public transportation. Once home, take a 15-minute break to change clothes and make the complete shift.

Be realistic. There is always more to do than time available, so figure out what you can and can’t do. You may need to adjust your expectations of both work life and your home life.

Clip Your Way to Savings

Clip Your Way to Savings

Coupons can help you save money, but only if you use them right. Here are some tips for reaping the benefits:

Remember where they are. The first obstacle to overcome with coupons is forgetting to use them. Keep them someplace handy, like your wallet or briefcase. If you’ve got dry-cleaning coupons, pin them to the laundry bag. If you’ve got one for a restaurant, tack it onto the fridge or in your restaurant guidebook.

Use coupons only for items you normally buy. If you usually go with a generic brand of corn flakes, don’t buy a name-brand box just because you can save 35 cents. Be sure the savings from the coupon actually provides a better deal.

Don’t buy more than you need. Coupons are there to promote certain products and services. If you get an auto coupon for a free oil change, don’t let salespeople pressure you into purchasing additional high-cost services at the same time.

Read the fine print. Make sure you know all the terms at the beginning. Keep an eye out for restrictions like, “Not valid with other offers,” or “Mention the ad when placing an order.”

Make Your Shower Sparkle

Make Your Shower Sparkle

Are you tired of your shower keeping your bathroom from looking sparkly clean? Try these tips to help keep your shower shining.

Get Rid of Buildup. Try mixing some liquid soap with baking soda, until it’s the consistency of frosting. Scrub it onto the glass shower door with a no-scratch sponge.

Multitask. Just as your finishing up your shower, grab a sponge like a Magic Eraser and give your shower door a quick wipe down. The warm water will have already loosened up the grime, making cleaning a breeze.

Squeegee. Prevent hard-water deposits by using a squeegee after each use.

Prevention. Using a Daily Shower Spray between deep cleans will help keep your shower clear. Using one of these sprays will help prevent hard-water stains and buildup.

Protect Your Eyes

Protect Your Eyes

If you spend more than a couple of hours a day staring at the computer, you could be at risk for computer vision syndrome (sometimes called “Google Eyes”). The result of prolonged computer use, symptoms usually include blurred vision, dry eyes, red, itchy, watery eyes, headaches, and even muscle spasms. Heed these tips for reducing eyestrain:

Monitor placement. Experts recommend placing your computer monitor 20 to 26 inches away from your eyes. This cuts down the strain of looking too closely at a screen, which can result in blurred distance vision.

  • Blinking. Research shows that people normally blink about 12 times per minute, but computer users blink only five times per minute. The longer you keep your eyes open, the more likely your corneas will dehydrate, burn, and ache. Blinking more ensures that you keep your eyes lubricated and clean of air particles.

  • Lighting. Much of the eyestrain associated with computer use is caused by poor lighting and screen glare. To keep strain at bay, make sure your workspace is well lit. You can also use glare protectors over your monitor.

  • Frequent breaks. Experts recommend that you take a break from computer work every 15 minutes. All it takes is a quick glance around the room to allow your eyes to focus on distant objects. Doing this will give the muscles in your eyes time to relax a bit.

Best Year in Dura-Shine Clean History

It’s that time of the year again. A time to reflect on all that we have accomplished in the previous year and a time to look forward to all that can be accomplished this year. We want to thank everyone who made 2013 the best year ever at Dura-Shine Clean. We could not have done it without the great team of people who work for us, our amazing clients, and without the amazing community support we have received.

Here are a few of our 2013 highlights:

  • In February, we were selected as the Tri-Cities Regional Chamber Member of the Month.

  • In May, Dura-Shine Clean was honored as the 2013 Mid Columbia Small Business of the Year.

  • In late May, we celebrated the opening of our new corporate headquarters facility in Pasco,   Washington. Over 300 guests and friends attended our grand opening, which included much   celebration and a flash mob during the ceremony.

  • In September Dura-Shine Clean was honored with the Pasco Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year award.

  • In late October, our newly designed website received a Marcom International Gold Award for animation design.

  • We continued our partnership with the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation, proudly cleaning over 50 homes for local women battling cancer.

  • We honored our commitment to be a strong community partner by continuing to give back and  be involved in many causes and volunteer efforts in the cities we serve.

We were inspired by many of the recognitions we received in 2013. We are fired up and focused on continuing to provide great services to our clients in 2014! Thank you for being a part of the Dura-Shine Clean family and we wish you much success and happiness in 2014!
