Clip Your Way to Savings
Coupons can help you save money, but only if you use them right. Here are some tips for reaping the benefits:
Remember where they are. The first obstacle to overcome with coupons is forgetting to use them. Keep them someplace handy, like your wallet or briefcase. If you’ve got dry-cleaning coupons, pin them to the laundry bag. If you’ve got one for a restaurant, tack it onto the fridge or in your restaurant guidebook.
Use coupons only for items you normally buy. If you usually go with a generic brand of corn flakes, don’t buy a name-brand box just because you can save 35 cents. Be sure the savings from the coupon actually provides a better deal.
Don’t buy more than you need. Coupons are there to promote certain products and services. If you get an auto coupon for a free oil change, don’t let salespeople pressure you into purchasing additional high-cost services at the same time.
Read the fine print. Make sure you know all the terms at the beginning. Keep an eye out for restrictions like, “Not valid with other offers,” or “Mention the ad when placing an order.”
