3 Steps to a Clean Washing Machine

When we think of our appliances getting dirty, we don’t consider a clean washing machine as something that will ever get dirty. But the dirt that disappears from your clothes has to go somewhere, right? Follow these three easy steps from Better Homes and Gardens to make sure that grimy buildup doesn’t end up on your clothes. Completing these three steps quarterly will eliminate buildup in hoses and pipes, and ensure your clothes are as clean as possible.

Step One – Run an empty, regular cycle on hot, using two cups of vinegar instead of detergent. The hot water-vinegar combo removes and prevents bacteria growth.

Step Two – In a bucket or nearby sink, mix ¼ cup vinegar with a quart of warm water. Use this mixture, plus a sponge and dedicated toothbrush, to clean the inside of the machine. Pay special attention to dispensers and the inside of the door. If your soap dispenser is removable, soak it in the vinegar and water before scrubbing. If you have a front-loading machine, be sure to clean the rubber seal. Don’t forget to wipe down the exterior of the machine, too.

Step Three – Run one more empty, regular cycle on hot, without detergent or vinegar.

Ta Da! You now have a clean washing machine!
